Overview

Mustard extract refers to the concentrated preparation derived from the seeds of various species of the mustard plant, most commonly Brassica nigra (black mustard), Sinapis alba (white/yellow mustard), and Brassica juncea (brown/Indian/Chinese mustard)[5][6]. Mustard extracts are rich in bioactive compounds such as glucosinolates (notably sinigrin and sinalbin) that break down into isothiocyanates like allyl isothiocyanate. These compounds are responsible for many of its biological activities. Mechanistically, isothiocyanates exhibit antimicrobial activity by inhibiting bacterial and fungal growth[4][7], anti-inflammatory effects through modulation of inflammatory mediators[4][5], and antiproliferative actions against certain cancer cell lines via induction of apoptosis[9]. Mustard extracts have been traditionally used topically for inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and rheumatism; orally or topically for respiratory congestion; and in some cultures as a diuretic or emetic[1][2][6]. Modern research supports their potential use in oral health (e.g., periodontitis) due to antimicrobial properties[4] and suggests possible antidiabetic effects when combined with standard medications[7]. However, robust clinical evidence supporting these uses remains limited.
