MV-Edm refers to the Edmonston strain of live attenuated measles virus, widely used as the basis for the measles vaccine and as a platform for oncolytic virotherapy. MV-Edm preferentially infects cells expressing CD46 or SLAM receptors, leading to extensive cell fusion (syncytia) and lysis in tumor cells, while causing minimal cytopathic effect in non-transformed cells. Recombinant MV-Edm derivatives have been engineered to deliver therapeutic or reporter genes and have demonstrated significant antitumor activity in preclinical and early-phase clinical studies targeting various malignancies, including ovarian cancer and glioblastoma multiforme. MV-Edm shows an outstanding safety profile, with millions of doses safely administered annually for measles immunization. Current research focuses on improving tumor targeting, evading neutralizing antibodies, and combining MV-Edm with other cancer therapies.
