Overview

MV-NIS + mesenchymal stem cells is an investigational advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) that utilizes mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as "Trojan horse" delivery vehicles for an oncolytic measles virus. The virus, a modified Edmonston strain (MV), is engineered to express the human sodium-iodide symporter (NIS), which allows for non-invasive monitoring of viral spread via PET or SPECT imaging and enables targeted radiotherapy. By loading the virus into MSCs, the therapy seeks to shield the oncolytic agent from neutralizing antibodies in the bloodstream and exploit the natural tumor-homing capabilities of the stem cells to treat metastatic disease. Once the MSCs reach the tumor microenvironment, the virus is released to selectively infect and lyse cancer cells—primarily through CD46-mediated entry—while sparing healthy tissue. This combination approach is currently being evaluated for the treatment of refractory solid tumors, most notably ovarian cancer.
