MVA-BN anthrax vaccine is a recombinant viral vector vaccine developed by Bavarian Nordic for the prevention of anthrax, caused by *Bacillus anthracis*. It utilizes the Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) platform, a highly attenuated, non-replicating orthopoxvirus, to deliver the gene encoding the Protective Antigen (PA) of *B. anthracis*. Upon administration, the MVA vector enters host cells and expresses the PA protein, which is the primary immunogen of the anthrax toxin. This triggers a robust immune response, including the production of neutralizing antibodies that prevent the binding of anthrax toxins to host cell receptors. The vaccine is designed as a next-generation alternative to the existing Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed (AVA), offering a more favorable safety profile and a simplified dosing schedule. It has been developed primarily under contracts with the U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) for the Strategic National Stockpile.
