MVA-BN-HPV is a recombinant therapeutic vaccine based on the Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Bavarian Nordic (MVA-BN) viral vector platform, developed by Bavarian Nordic in collaboration with Janssen for treating chronic high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infections, particularly HPV16 and HPV18 subtypes in the cervix, which can lead to cervical cancer and other HPV-induced cancers. It is designed as a heterologous prime-boost regimen, where it serves as the boost following priming with Janssen's AdVac adenoviral vector expressing HPV antigens, aiming to enhance and prolong immune responses against HPV through induction of robust T-cell and antibody responses targeting viral oncoproteins such as E6 and E7. The program advanced to a Phase 1/2a clinical trial initiated in 2019 evaluating safety, reactogenicity, and immunogenicity in women with persistent cervical HPV infections, but Janssen discontinued the collaboration in 2021, halting further development.[1][2][5][8][15]
