Overview

MVA-BN measles vaccine is a recombinant, non-replicating viral vector vaccine candidate developed by Bavarian Nordic. It utilizes the Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA-BN) platform, a highly attenuated strain of vaccinia virus that is unable to replicate in human cells, to deliver and express the hemagglutinin (H) and fusion (F) glycoproteins of the measles virus. This platform is designed to induce both robust neutralizing antibody responses and potent T-cell mediated immunity. The primary indication for this vaccine is the prevention of measles, particularly in populations where traditional live-attenuated vaccines, such as the standard Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine, are contraindicated. This includes immunocompromised individuals, such as those with HIV, and infants who may still possess maternal antibodies that interfere with live-attenuated vaccine efficacy. The MVA-BN vector itself acts as an endogenous adjuvant by stimulating innate immune pathways, including TLR2 and TLR6.
