Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MVA-BN-RSV is a viral vector vaccine candidate developed by Bavarian Nordic for the prevention of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, specifically targeting older adults (≥60 years). The vaccine utilizes the Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Bavarian Nordic (MVA-BN) platform, a non-replicating viral vector, to deliver five RSV antigens: the surface glycoproteins (F and G) from both RSV subtypes A and B, and three internal proteins (N, M2-1, and P). This multi-antigen approach was designed to elicit a broad immune response, including both neutralizing antibodies and robust T-cell activation. Despite showing promise in Phase 2 challenge studies and immunogenicity trials, the pivotal Phase 3 VANIR trial failed to meet its primary endpoint of preventing RSV-related lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) in July 2023. Consequently, Bavarian Nordic discontinued the program and terminated its development partnership with Nuance Pharma.
