MVA-HBs is a recombinant viral vector therapeutic vaccine designed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It utilizes the Modified Vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA) platform, a highly attenuated poxvirus, to deliver and express the HBV surface antigen (HBsAg). Developed by the Centre for Clinical Vaccinology and Tropical Medicine at the University of Oxford, the vaccine is typically employed as the booster component in a heterologous prime-boost strategy, following priming with a DNA plasmid vaccine (such as pSG2.HBs). The primary goal of MVA-HBs is to stimulate a robust, T-cell-mediated immune response against HBsAg to overcome the immune tolerance characteristic of chronic HBV infection. Clinical trials have evaluated its safety and immunogenicity in healthy volunteers and HBe antigen-negative chronic HBV carriers, sometimes in combination with the antiviral drug lamivudine.
