The MVA HIV-1 vaccine is an investigational recombinant viral vector vaccine based on the Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) platform. Developed by the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (SMI), it is designed to prevent HIV-1 infection by expressing multiple HIV-1 antigens, including Env (gp120/gp160), Gag, Pol, Nef, Tat, and Rev. The vaccine aims to elicit robust cellular (T cell) and humoral (antibody) immune responses. In clinical studies such as the HIVIS07 trial, it has been evaluated as a heterologous boost following a DNA vaccine prime (HIVIS DNA), sometimes administered with dermal electroporation to enhance immunogenicity.
