MVA-IE1 is an investigational viral vector vaccine developed to prevent or manage Cytomegalovirus (CMV) complications, particularly in immunocompromised populations such as hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HCT) recipients. The vaccine utilizes the Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) platform—a highly attenuated, non-replicating orthopoxvirus—to deliver and express the CMV Immediate-Early 1 (IE1) protein. IE1 is a critical regulatory protein expressed early during CMV infection and serves as a primary target for the host's cellular immune response. By presenting this antigen, MVA-IE1 aims to stimulate and expand CMV-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell populations, enhancing the patient's ability to control viral replication and reducing the risk of CMV-related disease. It has been evaluated in clinical trials both as a standalone agent and in combination with other MVA-based CMV antigens.
