MVA LS2 is an investigational malaria vaccine candidate developed by the University of Oxford. It is based on the Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) viral vector platform and encodes a novel liver-stage malaria dual antigen, referred to as LS2. The vaccine is designed to stimulate immune responses against Plasmodium falciparum, specifically targeting liver-stage antigens to prevent malaria infection. MVA LS2 has been evaluated in clinical trials as part of a heterologous prime-boost regimen, often following priming with ChAdOx1 LS2 (a chimpanzee adenoviral vector expressing the same antigens). Its mechanism of action involves immunostimulation through delivery and expression of malaria antigens, leading to both humoral and cellular immune responses aimed at preventing or reducing P. falciparum infection[1][3][4].
