Overview

MVA-mBN32 is a recombinant vaccine based on the Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) platform engineered to express cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) and helper T lymphocyte (HTL) epitopes from HIV-1. It was developed as an epitope-based therapeutic and prophylactic vaccine candidate for HIV infection. The goal of this approach was to induce a broad cell-mediated immune response—specifically targeting conserved regions of the virus—to elicit both CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell responses against HIV-1 antigens. Clinical studies demonstrated that while the vaccine was safe and induced strong vector-specific antibody responses, it failed to generate robust or consistent HIV-1-specific cellular immune responses in healthy adults[3][6][9]. Development for HIV indications has been discontinued.
