MVA-VLP-Ebola is an investigational vaccine platform developed by GeoVax Labs designed for the prevention of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). The technology utilizes a Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) viral vector that has been genetically engineered to express specific Ebola virus proteins, typically the Glycoprotein (GP), Matrix protein (VP40), and Nucleoprotein (NP). Unlike traditional viral vectors that simply deliver a single antigen, the GeoVax platform is designed so that these proteins self-assemble into non-infectious Virus-Like Particles (VLPs) within the cells of the vaccinated individual. These VLPs mimic the authentic structure and "budding" process of the actual Ebola virus, presenting antigens in their native conformation to the immune system. This dual-action approach—combining the high immunogenicity of a viral vector with the structural presentation of VLPs—is intended to elicit a comprehensive immune response, including both high-titer neutralizing antibodies and robust T-cell activity. The vaccine has demonstrated 100% protection in non-human primate models against lethal challenges of both Zaire and Sudan ebolavirus strains.
