Overview

MVA3000 is an attenuated (non-replicating) Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) smallpox vaccine developed for use in individuals for whom the traditional live vaccinia virus-based smallpox vaccines are contraindicated, such as those with immune system disorders or skin conditions like eczema. Unlike conventional smallpox vaccines, which can cause serious side effects in certain populations due to their ability to replicate in human cells, MVA3000 uses a highly attenuated strain of vaccinia that cannot replicate in human cells. This makes it safer for immunocompromised individuals and those with atopic dermatitis. The primary mechanism of action is immunostimulation—eliciting an immune response against the variola virus (smallpox). It was co-developed by Acambis and Baxter Healthcare[1][5][6][8].
