Overview

MVE-2 is a specific low-molecular-weight fraction (approximately 12,500 to 15,500 Da) of the divinyl ether-maleic anhydride (DIVEMA) copolymer, a synthetic polyanionic polymer also known as pyran copolymer. It functions as a pleiotropic biological response modifier and immunomodulator. MVE-2 primarily acts by activating macrophages, inducing the production of interferon, and stimulating natural killer (NK) cell activity, thereby enhancing the host's antitumor and antiviral defenses. In experimental oncology, it has been utilized as an adjuvant in tumor vaccines to induce specific syngeneic antitumor immunity, particularly in murine models of B-16 melanoma. While it showed potent immunostimulatory effects in preclinical research, its clinical development was historically limited by the systemic toxicities associated with higher molecular weight fractions of polyanionic polymers.
