MW189 is a brain-penetrant, small molecule inhibitor of p38α mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38α MAPK) designed to modulate neuroinflammation. Developed by Dr. D. Martin Watterson at Northwestern University and licensed to Transition Therapeutics (later acquired by OPKO Health), MW189 targets the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines by glia. It has been evaluated in clinical trials for the treatment of acute brain injury and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), including the Phase 2a BEACH trial. The compound is distinguished by its selectivity for the p38α isoform and its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, offering a potential therapeutic approach for both acute and chronic neurodegenerative conditions.
