Overview

Mycobacterium vaccae (brand names Vaccae, Mica, or Microcard) is a heat-killed, whole-cell biological vaccine developed by Anhui Zhifei Longcom Biologic Pharmacy Co., Ltd. It consists of inactivated *Mycobacterium vaccae* bacteria and acts as an immunomodulator to enhance cell-mediated immunity against *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*. Originally approved in China in 2001 as an adjuvant treatment for active tuberculosis, it received expanded approval from the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in 2021 for the preventive treatment of individuals with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). The vaccine is administered via intramuscular injection and has demonstrated efficacy in reducing the progression from latent infection to active disease by stimulating Th1-type immune responses.
