Overview

Mycomycen is a topical antifungal medication developed and marketed by the Greek pharmaceutical company Verisfield. Its active ingredient is ciclopirox olamine, a hydroxypyridone derivative that acts as a broad-spectrum antifungal agent. Unlike many antifungals that target cell membrane synthesis, ciclopirox works primarily by chelating trivalent cations such as Fe3+ and Al3+. These cations are essential cofactors for various fungal enzymes, including those involved in mitochondrial respiration, nutrient transport, and the degradation of peroxides. Mycomycen is indicated for the treatment of fungal infections such as vaginal candidiasis and onychomycosis (nail fungal infections). It also exhibits antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and is available in multiple formulations, including a 1% vaginal cream, 100mg vaginal suppositories, and a nail lacquer.
