Overview

Mycophenolate mofetil + mycophenolate sodium is a combination of two immunosuppressive agents that are both prodrugs of mycophenolic acid. These drugs inhibit inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), an enzyme crucial for the de novo synthesis of guanosine nucleotides in lymphocytes. By blocking this pathway, they suppress T- and B-lymphocyte proliferation and function, thereby reducing immune-mediated organ rejection after transplantation. Both agents are used to prevent rejection in kidney, heart, or liver transplants and may be used off-label for autoimmune diseases such as lupus nephritis and vasculitis[2][3][4][8]. The two forms differ mainly in their formulation—mycophenolate mofetil is available as immediate-release tablets/capsules/suspension/injection (Cellcept), while mycophenolate sodium is formulated as enteric-coated delayed-release tablets (Myfortic)[7]. They should not be interchanged without physician supervision due to differences in absorption[7].
