Mycophenolate Mofetil Accord

Mycophenolate Mofetil Accord is a generic immunosuppressive medication containing mycophenolate mofetil, the 2-morpholinoethyl ester of mycophenolic acid (MPA). It serves as a prodrug that is rapidly converted to MPA, a potent and selective inhibitor of inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH). By inhibiting the type II isoform of IMPDH, MPA depletes guanosine nucleotides via the de novo pathway, which is essential for the proliferation of T and B lymphocytes. This mechanism effectively suppresses immune-mediated rejection of transplanted organs. Developed in collaboration with institutions like Oslo University Hospital HF and marketed by Accord Healthcare, it is primarily indicated for the prophylaxis of acute organ rejection in patients undergoing allogeneic kidney, heart, or liver transplantation, typically as part of a multi-drug regimen including corticosteroids and cyclosporine.
