Overview

Mycophenolate sodium is an immunosuppressive agent used primarily to prevent organ transplant rejection and to treat certain autoimmune diseases. It is the sodium salt form of mycophenolic acid, which acts as a potent, reversible inhibitor of inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), an enzyme essential for the de novo synthesis of guanosine nucleotides. This inhibition selectively impairs lymphocyte proliferation because T and B lymphocytes rely heavily on this pathway for purine synthesis. As a result, DNA replication in these immune cells is suppressed, reducing immune-mediated damage or rejection[1][3][6]. Mycophenolate sodium is commonly used in combination with other immunosuppressants such as cyclosporine and corticosteroids following kidney transplantation[4]. It also has applications in treating autoimmune conditions like lupus nephritis and vasculitis[3][8]. Developed by: Novartis Primary Indication: Prevention of organ transplant rejection
