Mycosol is a pharmaceutical antifungal drug primarily available as tablets and creams, with terbinafine as its active ingredient. It is indicated for the treatment of a wide range of fungal infections affecting the skin and nails, including ringworm, athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), onychomycosis (fungal nail infections), and tinea capitis (scalp ringworm). Mycosol exerts its antifungal effect by inhibiting squalene epoxidase, a key enzyme in the fungal ergosterol biosynthesis pathway. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of toxic squalene within the fungal cell and a deficiency of ergosterol, a crucial component of the fungal cell membrane. The resulting disruption of the fungal cell membrane compromises its integrity, preventing fungal growth and ultimately leading to fungal cell death.
