Overview

Mylan-Nifedipine extended release (formerly Gen-Nifedipine extended release) is a generic extended-release formulation of nifedipine, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker. Developed by Genpharm and evaluated in clinical trials by SocraTec R&D, this formulation utilizes an osmotic push-pull system to provide controlled release of the active ingredient over a 24-hour period. Nifedipine acts by inhibiting the transmembrane influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle cells, leading to systemic vasodilation and reduced peripheral resistance. It is indicated for the treatment of hypertension and chronic stable angina pectoris. Bioavailability studies conducted by SocraTec R&D compared this generic version to the reference product Adalat XL (Bayer) to assess bioequivalence under both fasted and fed conditions.
