Overview

Myo-inositol is a naturally occurring carbocyclic sugar and the most abundant form of inositol found in nature. It is sometimes referred to as vitamin B8 (though it is not a true vitamin) and plays a key role as a structural basis for secondary messengers involved in signal transduction for hormones such as insulin and neurotransmitters. Myo-inositol acts as an important growth-promoting factor for mammalian cells and animals[8]. It mediates signal transduction by participating in the formation of phosphatidylinositol phosphates that regulate cellular processes including cell growth, survival, and metabolism[6][8]. As a supplement or drug ingredient, myo-inositol has been used primarily to improve insulin sensitivity (notably in polycystic ovary syndrome), metabolic syndrome, gestational diabetes mellitus prevention/treatment[4][5], fertility enhancement (especially for women with PCOS), diabetic neuropathy, depression, panic disorder[5], Alzheimer's disease[5], and other conditions. Its mechanism includes improving insulin signaling pathways and modulating glucose uptake at the cellular level[4][6]. Myo-inositol is available over-the-counter as a dietary supplement.
