Myoblast autologous graft refers to the process of harvesting, expanding, and transplanting a patient's own skeletal muscle-derived myoblasts (muscle progenitor cells) for therapeutic purposes. The most common clinical applications have been in cardiac repair—specifically for ischemic cardiomyopathy and heart failure following myocardial infarction—and in rare muscle disorders such as oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD). The procedure involves taking a muscle biopsy from the patient, culturing and expanding the myoblasts ex vivo, and then injecting them into target tissues (e.g., myocardium or pharyngeal muscles). Mechanistically, these cells are intended to engraft at sites of tissue injury or degeneration, where they may contribute to regeneration by differentiating into new muscle fibers or supporting local repair processes. Clinical trials have demonstrated feasibility and safety but mixed efficacy results; some studies report improvements in function or quality of life while others show no significant benefit over standard treatments[1][2][3][4][5].
