Overview

MyoCell II is a second-generation autologous cell therapy developed by Bioheart (now U.S. Stem Cell) for the treatment of congestive heart failure and chronic myocardial ischemia. The therapy consists of skeletal myoblasts harvested from the patient's own muscle tissue, which are then expanded ex vivo and genetically modified using a non-viral plasmid to overexpress Stromal Cell-Derived Factor-1 (SDF-1). Once injected intramyocardially, the myoblasts provide structural support to the damaged heart wall, while the secreted SDF-1 acts as a potent chemoattractant for endogenous stem and progenitor cells. This dual mechanism is intended to promote myocardial regeneration, enhance angiogenesis, and improve overall cardiac function in patients with heart failure following a myocardial infarction.
