MyoSponge is an acellular, implantable biomimetic scaffold developed by GenAssist Inc. for the treatment of volumetric muscle loss (VML) and severe traumatic muscle injuries. Composed of a sponge-like matrix of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, including collagen, gelatin, and laminin, the device is designed to be surgically implanted into damaged muscle tissue. Its mechanism of action involves providing structural matrix cues that recruit endogenous muscle satellite cells to the injury site, facilitating functional muscle regeneration and reducing scar tissue formation. Preclinical studies have shown its potential to rebuild muscle fibers and restore strength in conditions such as gunshot wounds, blast injuries, necrotizing fasciitis, and tumor resections.
