Overview

Myrciaria dubia is an Amazonian evergreen shrub whose fruit is commonly known as "camu camu." The fruit is notable for its extremely high vitamin C content and a rich profile of bioactive compounds including phenolic acids (such as ellagic acid), flavonoids (like rutin and quercetin), anthocyanins (cyanidin-3-glucoside), carotenoids (β-carotene, lutein), and various minerals. Traditionally used to address malnutrition due to its nutrient density, it has also been investigated for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive (pain-relieving), antiedematogenic (anti-swelling), anti-allergic effects via mast cell stabilization and histamine receptor inhibition[1][2][3][5][7][9]. Its mechanism of action appears to be multifactorial—primarily through antioxidant activity attributed to vitamin C and polyphenols; some studies suggest direct inhibition of histamine H1/H4 receptors and histidine decarboxylase[9]. It is being explored in early clinical trials for potential roles in cancer therapy support and other chronic diseases but lacks robust evidence or regulatory approval for any specific indication.
