Overview

Myrtol is a standardized phytotherapeutic distillate derived from the essential oils of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), sweet orange (Citrus aurantifolia or Citrus sinensis), lemon (Citrus limon), and myrtle (Myrtus communis) in a fixed ratio of 66:32:1:1. The main active monoterpenes are (+)-α-pinene, d-limonene, and eucalyptol. Myrtol exhibits mucosecretolytic (mucus-dissolving) properties and has additional antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and bronchospasmolytic effects. Its mechanism includes inhibition of leukocyte activation during inflammation—reducing oxidative cell damage—and inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase activity in basophils/eosinophils to decrease leukotriene production. Clinically it is used for acute and chronic bronchitis as well as sinusitis to facilitate mucus clearance from the respiratory tract[2][5][6].
