Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mystead is an immunosuppressive medication containing mycophenolate mofetil, which is the 2-morpholinoethyl ester of mycophenolic acid (MPA). Marketed by Steadfast Medishield, it is primarily used in combination with corticosteroids and cyclosporine to prevent organ rejection in patients receiving allogeneic renal or cardiac transplants. It is also indicated for the treatment of rejection in liver transplant patients who are unable to tolerate other immunosuppressants like tacrolimus or cyclosporine due to neurotoxicity. The drug acts as a reversible, noncompetitive inhibitor of inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), an enzyme essential for the de novo synthesis of guanosine nucleotides. Since T and B lymphocytes are highly dependent on this pathway for proliferation, Mystead effectively suppresses the immune response against the transplanted organ by selectively inhibiting lymphocyte growth.
