Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MYTX-589 (formerly SBT-589) is an investigational, preclinical-stage small molecule designed to target mitochondrial dysfunction in rare neurodegenerative and mitochondrial disorders. Developed by Mighty Therapeutics (formerly Stealth BioTherapeutics), the compound belongs to the SBT-580 series of mitochondrial-targeted therapies. Unlike the company's cardiolipin-binding candidates, MYTX-589 acts through a unique mechanism of action that bypasses deficiencies in Complex I of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, thereby restoring cellular bioenergetics, reducing the emission of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and protecting against iron-mediated cell death. Preclinical studies have demonstrated its potential as a disease-modifying therapy, showing cardioprotective effects, prevention of cardiac hypertrophy, and delayed mortality in mouse models of Friedreich's ataxia cardiomyopathy, as well as therapeutic potential in Leigh syndrome.
