Overview

Myxothiazol is a natural antifungal antibiotic produced by the myxobacterium *Myxococcus fulvus*. It acts as a potent inhibitor of the mitochondrial electron transport chain complex III (cytochrome bc1 complex), specifically binding to the quinol oxidation (Qo) site. This competitive inhibition blocks electron transfer to the Rieske iron-sulfur protein and disrupts cellular respiration in fungi and some Gram-positive bacteria. Myxothiazol is primarily used as a research tool for studying mitochondrial function and bioenergetics rather than as a therapeutic drug[5][4][8].
