nüm Vapocoolant Spray

nüm is a sterile, non-flammable topical anesthetic vapocoolant spray (skin refrigerant) composed of pentafluoropropane and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane. Developed by Medical Dynamics, Inc. and marketed through 623 Medical, it is designed to provide rapid, transient local anesthesia by cooling the skin surface. This physical cooling mechanism temporarily reduces the nerve conduction velocity of C fibers and A-delta fibers in the peripheral nervous system, effectively numbing the area within seconds for approximately 60 seconds. It is indicated for minor surgical procedures (such as lancing boils and drainage of small abscesses), injections (venipuncture, IV starts), and the relief of minor sports injuries in patients aged four and older. Clinical research, including studies led by Marianne Hutti, has evaluated its efficacy in reducing pain associated with port access in pediatric oncology patients compared to traditional topical anesthetics like EMLA cream.
