Overview
N-(1-carbamoyl-2-phenyl-ethyl) butyramide, also known as FBA or Phenylalanine Butyramide (PBA), is a butyrate releaser and derivative of butyric acid and the amino acid phenylalanine. It is a solid, odorless, and tasteless compound that is stable at gastric pH and designed to release butyrate constantly throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid, is a major gut microbiota metabolite known for its pivotal role in maintaining gut and skin health. FBA/PBA acts as a histone deacetylase inhibitor and modulates innate immunity biomarkers. It has demonstrated beneficial effects in improving gut barrier function, exerting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, enhancing keratinocyte function, promoting wound healing, and inhibiting tyrosinase. It is being investigated for applications in conditions such as atopic dermatitis, photo-damage, and as a protective agent against SARS-CoV-2 infection.
