n-(2-hydroxyethyl)retinamide is a synthetic derivative of retinoic acid belonging to the class of synthetic retinamides. Like other retinoids, it was primarily developed for *cancer chemoprevention* due to its reduced toxicity relative to natural retinoids while maintaining significant biological activity. Preclinical animal studies revealed that n-(2-hydroxyethyl)retinamide inhibits neoplastic transformation and impacts epithelial cell differentiation, probably through gene activation mechanisms, even though it has minimal measurable affinity for retinoid receptors and may act partly via slow hydrolysis to retinoic acid. It has not been developed or marketed for commercial pharmaceutical use, and limited evidence exists for its use in human clinical trials[1][2][5].
