N-27 is an engineered recombinant protein being developed by Neurocarrus as a long-acting, non-opioid therapeutic for the treatment of pain. The drug is designed to selectively target peripheral sensory neurons (nociceptors) and inhibit the release of pain-signaling neurotransmitters. It utilizes a modified toxin-based delivery mechanism to internalize a protease into the neuron, where it cleaves Synaptosomal-associated protein 25 (SNAP-25), a component of the SNARE complex required for vesicle exocytosis. This action effectively silences pain transmission for extended periods without the systemic side effects or addictive potential associated with opioids.
