This combination therapy consists of a recombinant influenza vaccine (FluBlok) administered in conjunction with an antioxidant protocol comprising N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), alpha lipoic acid (ALA), and liposomal glutathione. The regimen is primarily investigated for its potential to enhance vaccine-induced immune responses in elderly populations, who often exhibit immunosenescence and depleted endogenous antioxidant levels. NAC and ALA serve as precursors and metabolic regenerators for intracellular glutathione, while liposomal glutathione provides a direct, bioavailable source of the tripeptide. By reducing oxidative stress and optimizing the cellular redox environment, the combination aims to improve T-cell function and the subsequent production of neutralizing antibodies against viral hemagglutinin. FluBlok, developed by Protein Sciences Corporation (now part of Sanofi), is a recombinant hemagglutinin (rHA) vaccine produced using a baculovirus expression system in insect cells, which allows for a higher antigen concentration and avoids egg-based manufacturing limitations.
