Overview

N-acetylcarnosine is a synthetic derivative of the naturally occurring dipeptide carnosine. It is primarily used in ophthalmic solutions as an antioxidant to delay the progression and, in some cases, partially reverse age-related cataracts. The compound penetrates the cornea and is metabolized within the eye to L-carnosine, which protects lens proteins by scavenging free radicals, preventing cross-linking and glycation, and maintaining lens clarity. Clinical studies suggest improved visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and delayed cataract formation after topical use. It is widely utilized as a non-surgical alternative for initial stages of cataract management and may provide protective benefits against other oxidative ocular stresses[1][2][4][5][7][9].
