N-acetylcysteine + albuterol is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents commonly administered via inhalation (nebulization) for respiratory conditions. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) acts as a mucolytic agent, breaking down and thinning mucus in the airways to facilitate its clearance. Albuterol is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that induces bronchodilation by relaxing airway smooth muscle, thereby improving airflow. This combination is used adjunctively in patients with lung diseases characterized by thick or tenacious secretions and bronchospasm, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, and particularly in cases of inhalation injury or smoke-induced lung damage. The combined use leverages both mucolytic and bronchodilatory effects to improve airway patency and reduce respiratory complications[3][7]. Clinical studies have shown that this regimen may reduce the duration of mechanical ventilation in burn patients with inhalation injuries when used alongside other agents like nebulized heparin[1][3][8].
