Drug intelligence / Profile preview
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in combination with multivitamins and minerals is being investigated by the HonorHealth Research Institute as a neuroprotective treatment for geriatric patients (aged 60 and older) suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI). NAC acts as a small molecule antioxidant and a precursor to glutathione, the body's primary endogenous antioxidant. It also functions as a carbonyl scavenger, neutralizing reactive lipid aldehydes produced during oxidative stress following a brain injury. By reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, the combination therapy aims to minimize somatic, cognitive, and emotional post-concussion symptoms. This specific application focuses on the elderly population, where a pilot study has already shown significant improvements in concussion symptoms.
