N-acetylcysteine + saline is a combination formulation used primarily for inhalation therapy, where N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is diluted with normal saline before administration via nebulizer. N-acetylcysteine acts as a mucolytic agent by breaking disulfide bonds in mucus, thereby reducing its viscosity and facilitating airway clearance in conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, and other respiratory diseases characterized by thick or abnormal mucus secretions. Saline serves as the diluent to achieve the appropriate concentration for nebulization and to aid in humidification of airways. NAC also has antioxidant properties due to its role as a precursor to glutathione synthesis.
