Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This combination is a pre-procedure oral solution consisting of the mucolytic agent N-acetylcysteine and the anti-foaming agent simethicone. It is being investigated by the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences for its ability to enhance mucosal visibility during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. N-acetylcysteine works by reducing the viscosity of mucus through the cleavage of disulfide bonds in mucoproteins, while simethicone acts physically to reduce the surface tension of gas bubbles, causing them to coalesce and disperse. By clearing mucus and foam, the combination improves the diagnostic yield for gastric lesions, including early-stage cancers, ulcers, and erosions, which might otherwise be obscured during the procedure.
