Overview

N-Acetylmethionine is a derivative of the amino acid L-methionine in which an acetyl group is attached to the nitrogen atom. It is used experimentally as a nutritional supplement and for peritoneal dialysis in patients with renal failure or nutritional deficiency[1][2]. N-Acetylmethionine participates in methylation and transsulfuration metabolic pathways, serving as a biologically available, N-terminal capped form of methionine[5][6]. Its mechanism involves conversion to methionine and interaction with enzymes such as N-succinylamino acid racemase; it also plays roles in protein stability through N-terminal acetylation[1][5][6]. The compound has been studied for effects on cell growth, mitochondrial activity, and protein synthesis but remains primarily experimental without established pharmaceutical indications[1][6].
