Overview

N-acetyltryptophan is a naturally occurring small molecule derivative of the amino acid tryptophan. It functions as an inhibitor of the neurokinin 1 receptor (NK1R), the primary receptor for the neuropeptide substance P. Research has explored its potential neuroprotective effects, particularly in models of Parkinson's disease, where it appears to reduce neuroinflammation and preserve blood-brain barrier integrity. Historically, salts of N-acetyltryptophan were investigated for treating psychiatric disorders such as depression and manic-depressive psychoses. Currently, it is widely used as a research reagent, a pharmaceutical excipient, and an impurity reference standard (Tryptophan Related Compound B).
