N-acetyltyrosine (also known as N-acetyl-L-tyrosine) is a derivatized form of the amino acid tyrosine used primarily as a component in total parenteral nutrition (TPN). It serves as a precursor to tyrosine and is administered intravenously due to its enhanced solubility compared to free tyrosine. Its main clinical use is as a source of nitrogen and amino acids for nutritional support in patients who cannot tolerate or receive adequate oral nutrition. Mechanistically, it acts by providing bioavailable tyrosine for protein synthesis and neurotransmitter production. In addition to its nutritional role, research suggests that N-acetyl-L-tyrosine may trigger mitohormesis by transiently perturbing mitochondria and increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to adaptive stress responses[1][5][6].
