N-alpha-tosyl-L-arginine methyl ester (TAME) is a small molecule derivative of the amino acid L-arginine. In clinical research conducted by Penn State University, specifically in studies evaluating microvascular function in cancer survivors, it is utilized as a pharmacological probe to inhibit nitric oxide synthase (NOS). By locally administering TAME via microdialysis, researchers can block the production of nitric oxide and thereby isolate the nitric oxide-dependent component of vasodilation in response to stimuli such as acetylcholine. This allows for the assessment of endothelial function and cardiovascular health. Although TAME is also recognized in molecular biology as an inhibitor of the anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C) and certain proteases, its primary application in this specific clinical context is the investigation of microvessel reactivity.
