Overview

N-Methylmesoporphyrin containing copper is a specific copper metalloporphyrin complex. Its ligand, N-Methylmesoporphyrin IX (NMM), is a non-planar porphyrin derivative recognized for its ability to inhibit ferrochelatase, an enzyme critical for heme biosynthesis. NMM also selectively binds to and stabilizes G-quadruplex DNA structures. The incorporation of copper into the porphyrin ring forms a coordination complex. While NMM itself is primarily utilized as a research probe for G-quadruplex DNA and amyloid-β aggregation, copper porphyrin complexes, including those with nitrile functionalities, have demonstrated anticancer activity. This activity is often mediated through mechanisms such as DNA intercalation and the induction of mitochondrial dysfunction, suggesting potential therapeutic applications for copper-containing N-Methylmesoporphyrin, although its specific development as a therapeutic drug is not widely reported.
