Overview

N-methyltyramine is a naturally occurring phenethylamine alkaloid and trace amine found in various plants. It is the N-methyl analog of tyramine and shares many pharmacological properties with it. In humans and plants, it is biosynthesized by the N-methylation of tyramine via specific methyltransferase enzymes. Pharmacologically, n-methyltyramine acts as a pressor agent (increases blood pressure), though its potency is much lower than epinephrine. It can enhance norepinephrine release from cardiac tissue and has stimulant properties that have led to its inclusion in some dietary supplements marketed for weight loss and athletic performance; however, there is no robust scientific evidence supporting these uses. Mechanistically, it acts as a competitive substrate for monoamine oxidase and may influence neurotransmitter metabolism[1][3][4][6]. Its use as a supplement ingredient has been subject to regulatory scrutiny due to safety concerns[7].
