Overview

N1-dansylspermine is a synthetic small molecule consisting of a spermine backbone conjugated at the N1 position with a dansyl (5-dimethylaminonaphthalene-1-sulfonyl) group. It is primarily used as a biochemical probe and is known to act as an antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, a subtype of glutamate receptor in the central nervous system. Through antagonism of NMDA receptors, it can modulate synaptic transmission and is commonly used in research to study ion channel block and polyamine modulation mechanisms. The compound itself is not marketed as a therapeutic pharmaceutical, but is widely used in neuropharmacology research as a reference or tool compound[1][4][5].
