Overview

Nabi-HB Intravenous (investigated during development under the brand name Civacir) is an intravenous formulation of human hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) that was developed for the prevention of hepatitis B virus (HBV) recurrence in patients undergoing liver transplantation. It is a sterile solution of purified polyclonal immunoglobulin G (IgG) containing high titers of antibodies directed against the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The mechanism of action involves passive immunization, where the exogenous antibodies bind to and neutralize circulating HBV particles, thereby preventing the infection of the newly transplanted liver. Originally developed by Nabi Biopharmaceuticals, the product reached Phase 3 clinical trials but was ultimately discontinued and never brought to market. It is a specialized intravenous version of the intramuscular Nabi-HB product, which remains FDA-approved for post-exposure prophylaxis.
